it's Frida-hay!

Restyling some parts of a Dutch magazine, which is great fun! I have been focussing a lot on my illustrations lately, but I enjoy graphic design almost as equall. And really, there is not much difference between designing and drawing, the way I do it. But however fun this is, going to have some wine & dinner with a friend now. That's nice too.

again with the houses?

GiclĂ©e print by Los Angeles based illustrator and printmaker Chris Turnham. I'm starting to become a serious sucker for construction elements in drawings, I guess. Whether it's details or whole buildings. You especially have me when these images are lacking people. I love the two-dimensional of this image, which really isn't flat at all because of the way he uses the shadows. Mixing this with those paint-by-number-esk trees & shrubs: and you really get me excited! Excellent!

Oh yes, if I were a painter.. I'd like to call these my paintings. Paul Davies, I envy you.

quote of the day

"That truth-is-stranger-than-fiction factor keeps getting jacked up on us on a fairly regular, maybe even exponential, basis. I think that’s something peculiar to our time. I don’t think our grandparents had to live with that." Mark Wilson

modern-art-update

Today I've been to the Stedelijk Museum to start my modern-art-update. Years ago I graduated from art school, and apart from a few attempts in those first years to get 'into art', modern art and I gradually grew apart. I was thinking, I let myself get influenced by contemporary trends in interior, design and even fashion, but whatever happens in the modern-art-department is just passing me by. So two days ago I signed up for this 'Study day Contemporary Art' in April. And today I visited the Mike Kelley-exhibition. How's that for a start? I was very intrigued by his Educational Complex, an immense replica of buildings of all schools he attended, including the house where he grew up. He created most of this from memory and this explains the holes in the buildings. I have to say though, to fully appreciate Mike Kelley it's best you do a little pre-study. Which I didn't.. So I struggled a bit, but it helped to come across a few guided tours so I picked up some knowledge along the way. I'm glad I went. It's a bit like going to the gym: you feel so rewarded afterwards.

I know, you may (or may not) have seen this image on my pinterest-boards and Facebookpage already. But it just cracks me up. One of these days I will print & frame it, put it above my computer as well. Can't get enough of it, love it! Hahaha.

pre-poster

Haven't been writing for quite some time, which doesn't mean I haven't been working my ass off. To make up for not posting I will give you some previews. Note, they may never end up on my actual website so this may be the only bits you'll ever see of the drawings (if you have not subscribed to the magazine in which they appear, or are planning on buying them). I might be too critical of my own work, and so the majority of my illustrations don't get to experience the eternity of the internet. Life is hard for editorial drawings; I'm under no illusions about my illustrations. Eventually most of them will be kitty litter. But: for these two above I am filled with hope. They will be part of two posters. Who knows, the frog might just end up above some sweet little boys' bed..
